Massive well done to everyone

More than 100 riders of all ages took part in Haverhill Cycling Club’s recent Spring Sportive, which raised £1,900 for charity.

The event raised funds for WellChild, the National Charity for Sick Children.

The eldest rider to take part was 82 year-old Derek Foster and the youngest, 15 year-old Hector Corey.

Three routes of 50km, 100km and a challenging 80km were ridden along part of the Tour de France route in Essex and through the rolling countryside of Suffolk.

Haverhill Cycling Club chairman, Rob Elliott, said: “Apart from raising funds for such a worthwhile cause as WellChild, the aim was to provide a good day’s riding for club members and the general public and to encourage local people of all ages to enjoy a healthy, social sport which is available to everyone.

“We hope to carry on the legacy of our successful Olympic cyclists and have been financially assisted by Haverhill Town Council.

“We have recently started a new training scheme for aspiring young cyclists in Haverhill and hope the sport goes from strength to strength.”

After finishing, riders were able to enjoy refreshments and a barbeque thanks to generous donations by Sainsburys, David Anderson Roofing, Wicked Cake Company and Paul Firman (Fruiterer).
